Mentors Needed for Student Writing Competitions and Moot Court Court Competitions
Opportunities for Student Distinction (OSD) is eagerly seeking
graduates to coach students as they prepare for writing and moot court
competitions. This is a chance for you to help facilitate a student's
writing process as a coach for his/her writing competition entries. The
Northeastern Alumni/ae office is aiding in this effort by matching
students and graduates by their shared interest in a particular area of

Alumni/ae Board Member Profile
Michael Xavier '99
has served on the Alumni/ae Board since 2010. This year he is chairing
the Community Building Committee, which will serve as a liaison between
the School of Law, undergraduate colleges and other professional schools
Michael states, “Working on the Alumni/ae
Board has re-affirmed for me what I treasured about my time at the
School of Law. Working with other dedicated graduates is a true reminder
about what I loved about NUSL.”

Michael has practiced family law for more than 10 years and works with
families in distress caused by divorce, custody, child removal,
modification, guardianship, will contests and other related issues. His
practice also includes many cutting-edge legal issues, including
same-sex marriages, adoptions and assisted reproductive technology.
Michael recently served as a faculty member at Suffolk University Law
School’s Continuing Legal Education program teaching a course titled
Same Sex Marriage, Divorce, and Parentage Issues.

The five "Be's" for Social Media Management

networking is the sharing of our stories and interests with the intent
to influence others. Many lawyers have been apprehensive to connect via
this medium and are therefore not staying competitive with their
contemporaries. Below are five tips for social media utilization and
1. Be Seen.
Make sure you have claimed and created profiles for your practice and have a presence on all social media sites.
2. Be in Control.
Create a social media policy for your firm and employees. This should
include considerations regarding privacy tools and appropriate usage.
3. Be Consistent.
Develop a plan which includes times to post and topics so your
community knows what to expect. Determine the type of content that is
relevant to your audience. Select an individual or individuals who can
write on your behalf with a consistent voice.
4. Be Careful.
Even if you do not identify a client directly, ensure that you have not revealed any confidential or proprietary information.
5. Be Methodical.
Utilize tools like Hoot Suite and Google Analytics to track your successes and adjust your efforts accordingly.

In Our Name: A Play of the Torture Years
Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, 97 Cargill Hall, 4-5:30 p.m.
Michael Meltsner's acclaimed play, which offers a searing depiction of
how and why the U.S. government found itself brutally treating the men
it detained after 9/11, will be performed at Northeastern University.
The performance will be followed by a discussion with the audience and a
