As another school year draws to a close, we'd like to take the opportunity to thank you for your participation and support. This year we hosted regional alumni/ae receptions across the country and enjoyed another year of active chapters, substantive conferences and well attended regional events. Our success is due to active alumni/ae like you. Newsbriefs will return in September after a summer hiatus. Meanwhile, we'll be busy planning events for the upcoming year so keep an eye on our website for details!

Congratulations to the Class of 2013!

More than 230 graduates received their degrees during the School of Law commencement ceremony in Matthews Arena on Friday, May 24, 2013. New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan delivered the commencement address and was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws. A 1985 graduate of the School of Law, Hassan was sworn into office in January 2013.

NUSL Mourns the Loss of Professor Daniel Schaffer

Professor Dan Schaffer, who joined the Northeastern law faculty in 1970, unexpectedly passed away on May 9, 2013. After more than 40 years of dedicated teaching and research primarily in the tax field, his many contributions are well known to our community. Virtually every graduate of the law school who studied tax while here had the benefit of Dan's clear, well-organized, and rigorous teaching style.

Northeastern Honors Mo Cowan '94 at a Reception Attended by More than 400 Graduates and Friends!

Elizabeth Warren spoke at a reception for fellow senator Mo Cowan on May 15 in Washington, D.C. The event, hosted by President Joseph E. Aoun and Dean Jeremy Paul, brought together members of our local Northeastern community as well as congressional delegates representing Massachusetts, Washington, and North Carolina.

Women in the Law Conference 2013

The fifth annual Women in the Law Conference was held on May 3, 2013. More than 125 people attended and experienced a full day of dynamic presentations and networking with faculty, presenters, and alumni/ae. Visit our conference webpage to relive the experience or see what you missed, with photos and videos of the keynote address by the Honorable Victoria Roberts '76 as well as highlights from the panel discussions.

NUSL Hosts 20th Annual Denise Carty-Bennia Bar Awards

Five 3L students were awarded stipends to cover bar expenses at a ceremony and reception in honor of the late Professor Denise Carty-Bennia last month. The Alumni/ae Association’s Alumni/ae of Color Committee works closely with the Office of Alumni/ae Relations to host this annual graduation week event. This year’s keynote speaker was the Honorable Diana Maldonado '85, former First Judge of the Chelsea District Court, and newly appointed first ever Latina Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Appeals Court. "Denise was not simply a professor, she was a force --In science that is defined as: an influence that causes a change by way of movement, direction or reconstruction," Justice Maldonado remarked.

Dean Jeremy Paul Receives a Warm Welcome in North Carolina

NUSL held two regional events in North Carolina in early May. The first was held in Durham, NC at the home of Leslie Winner '76. The second took place at the new Charlotte branch of Northeastern University. Dean Jeremy Paul was in attendance at both events.

New Hampshire Area Grads Gather to Honor Governor Maggie Hassan '85

On May 29, 2013, Dean Jeremy Paul hosted a New Hampshire regional alumni/ae reception at the Bedford Village Inn in honor of Governor Maggie Hassan ’85. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for local NUSL graduates to celebrate Governor Hassan’s achievements while mingling with classmates over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

Hackney Appointed Associate Dean for Entrepreneurial Programs and Research Support

Professor James Hackney will assume responsibility for pairing the teaching and research missions of the law school with new markets and new sources of external funding.

Northeastern Launches $1 Billion Comprehensive Campaign

North­eastern launched its $1 bil­lion Empower cam­paign on Thursday, May 23, at a kickoff event that fea­tured inspiring calls to sup­port the university’s surging momentum as well as inter­ac­tive exhibits through which fac­ulty and stu­dents show­cased Northeastern’s ground­breaking research, rising global pro­file, and lead­er­ship in expe­ri­en­tial education. "Northeastern's law school has long led the way in experiential legal education and in building a diverse, collaborative learning environment. The Empower campaign will position us as pioneers once again," Dean Jeremy Paul said.

Same-Sex Couples in Japan: What Legal Framework?
A Presentation by Professor Yokoyama, Kyoto University School of Law

While Japanese law does not recognize marriage for same-sex couples, a number of other legal instruments have been used to provide legal protection and recognition to same-sex families. Professor Yokoyama brings in a social and historical dimension to this debate, including 150 years of data on divorce rates in Japan.

Join us Oct. 18-19 for Alumni/ae Weekend 2013: Honoring the classes of 1953, '73, '78, '83, '88, '93, '98, '03, and '08!
Start making plans to come back and visit with old friends and favorite faculty members whom you may not have seen since graduation. Meet some of our wonderful students and discover how NUSL has grown since you were last here. As always, surrounding class years are welcome to attend. The fall is a magnificent time to visit Boston!
