Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morrison visits Northeastern

The legendary Toni Morrison brought her wit and wisdom to the law school for our Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project's celebration of Martin Luther King Day. “Evil and vio­lence take the stage — all of it. It needs so much to call our atten­tion,” Mor­rison said. “But good­ness doesn’t need any­thing. If it says any­thing at all, it’s a whisper.”

"The Trouble I've Seen"

Featuring the work of Northeastern University School of Law's Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project (CRRJ), "The Trouble I've Seen" follows the investigations of three harrowing civil rights cold cases. Founded by Professor Margaret Burnham, CRRJ takes on cases that both horrify us and beg us to correct the record, to search for reconciliation and remediation for families and communities that even decades later shudder in the shadows of bigotry and injustice. "The Trouble I've Seen" is narrated by Julian Bond, former chairman of the NAACP.

Alumni/ae Board Member Profile

Gordon Moriarty ’93

Gordon Moriarty ’93 has served on the NUSL Alumni/ae Board since 2008 and has co-managed the Connections Program for several years.

“The law school’s emphasis on teaching practical legal skills, both in the classroom and through the co-op program, made it my No. 1 choice during the application process,” Gordon said. “In fact, my first co-op led to my post-graduate position. Because of this and the many relationships with faculty, colleagues, and students I have developed, I feel tremendous satisfaction by giving back to the school through my work on the Alumni/ae Board. If my role helps a handful of students and recent graduates, my time is well spent.”

As an intellectual property attorney and director in the Boston office of Preti, Flaherty, Beliveau & Pachios, LLP, Gordon develops and coordinates patent portfolios for corporate and institutional clients. In managing his clients’ intellectual property assets, Gordon provides guidance in the prosecution and licensing of patents and trademarks.

A native of the Philadelphia area, Gordon received a bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Communications Theory and Optics, from Northwestern University in 1982. He continued his engineering education at Loyola University in Baltimore, Md., before moving to Boston with his wife, Stacey, to attend NUSL in 1990. He and Stacey live in Newton, Mass., with their high school-aged daughters, Lee and Lauren. For fun, Gordon enjoys photography and competes in road races, ranging from 5Ks to marathons, including the Boston Marathon as a qualified runner three times.

Northeastern University School of Law Launches LLM with Specialization in Health Policy and Law

Building on the success of our newly launched LLM program, the law school will offer an LLM with a specialization in Health Policy and Law, beginning in fall 2013.

The Health Policy and Law specialization is open to seasoned practitioners in the field, as well as lawyers aiming to transition into the field. Fields of focus may include:

• Health Law
• Public Health Law
• Health Policy
• Global Health
• Health and Human Rights
• Drug Law
• Biotechnology and the Law.

The very successful LLM program for international lawyers also welcomes candidates for fall 2013.
