Fourth Annual Women in the Law Conference:
"Where We’ve Been, Where We’re Going"

There’s
still time to register for this year’s Women in the Law Conference,
which will be held on Friday, May 11, 2012, at the School of Law. Our
keynote speaker is
Gloria Cordes Larson,
a public policy expert, lawyer, and business leader, who assumed the
presidency of Bentley College in July 2007. The topics and panelists
promise a day of intriguing dialogue and discussion.
As part
of the day’s programing we invite recent graduates and students to
participate in speed mentoring. The conference offers numerous
networking opportunities and our expert panelists will provide
practical, implementable career tools for all.

New York City Chapter Event
On April 18, 2012, more than 50 New York area graduates gathered for a
reception with Dean Emily Spieler at Flûte Restaurant in New York City.
Local chapter chairs Maia Spilman ’96 and Coleen Chin ’99 also spoke to
the group about the regional chapter programs, including a
pairing/mentoring initiative for current students with alumni/ae; the NY Chapter’s LinkedIn page,
which features business referrals, job openings, discussions, and more;
and information about regional events. To get involved with the New

as our outstanding students of color. Five third-year students of color
will receive $1,000 scholarships for bar-related expenses.
Commencement 2012, Friday, May 25, Matthews Arena, Boston, (1:00 p.m.)
The School of Law 2012 Commencement will take place on Friday, May 25,
2012. A reception for graduates, family, and friends will follow the
ceremony. Jacqueline A. Berrien, chair of the U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission (EEOC), will deliver the Commencement address to
the approximately 200 graduates.

Join us October 20-21, 2012
During Alumni/ae Weekend 2012, alumni from class years ending in 2's
and 7's will gather on campus to celebrate milestone reunions. As
always, surrounding class years are also welcome to attend.
Start making plans to come back and visit with old friends and favorite
faculty members whom you may not have seen since graduation. Meet some
of our wonderful students and discover how NUSL has grown since you were
last here. The fall is a magnificent time to visit Boston!

with marketing and fund-raising. If you are interested in volunteering

Staci Rubin ’10, Julia Devanthery ’09, Chris Saccardi ’08, Anjali
Waikar ’05 and Raquel Webster '03 have been selected for a prestigious
program designed to identify and develop the next generation of lawyer
leaders. Only 14 attorneys were invited to attend the yearlong program.

Mary Bonauto '87 Talks to NPR About Her Clients' DOMA Challenge
For the first time, a Federal Appeals Court hears arguments about the
constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Seven
married same-sex couples and three widowers are challenging the law,
which prevents them from accessing federal spousal protections as other
married couples can.

Elinor Merberg ’88 named Chief of Injunction Litigation Branch
Elinor L. Merberg has been promoted to Assistant General Counsel in the
Division of Advice, Injunction Litigation Branch, of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The NLRB administers
and enforces the National Labor Relations Act, a federal law which
regulates labor-management relations in the private sector.

NUSL Teams Place in Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition
Two teams representing the School of Law's Intellectual Property
Society competed in the Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition, sponsored
by the International Trademark Association (INTA). Of the 18 teams
competing in the East Region, NUSL ranked third overall, third in Oral Arguments and third in Brief.

Doug Lloyd ’12 wins on Jeopardy
Doug Lloyd '12 bested the competition on a recent episode of the
classic TV quiz show. “It’s always been a dream of mine to be on the
show, and it was an even bigger dream to win,” said Lloyd, who plans to
split his $14,400 in winnings between loan payments and his upcoming
honeymoon.
